032 I'm fine... | Men's health week 2021

I'm fine...

Hi everyone, welcome to a slightly different podcast, I have been really unsure about recording this one but as it’s men's health week, maybe my words will help those who desperately need to feel connected, reassured or even just loved.  I wanted to share my story of "I'm fine."

If you aren’t a man, please don’t switch off, I hope what I share may inspire you to think about those around you, or even, I hope I may speak the words on your mind.

I'm fine...

Recently, I have felt like I am alone in a dark cave, I am shining my torch to find that little crack in the rubble, the exit out of this darkness and some light to move towards. I am conscious my batteries are running low and I am impatient to get out of this cave.

How long will this darkness last? Is there a way out? Will I be fine?

Thankfully, I have found a voice, someone that has called in the distance to give me hope, to pat me on the back when times are tough and to reassure me that I am adding value and I am on the way out of this darkness.

Although my problems and insecurities may seem highly unimportant to others, I guess the reason I wanted to share this story is that there are probably people out there who are in deeper, darker caves than me and whose batteries have run out and they are no longer able to see their way out.

This week is Men's health week (14-20 June) and there is a huge Stigma (especially for men) on sharing how we feel. Social pressures and the way society is painted often means that men find it harder to open up and discuss feelings of vulnerability or ask for help. The common response is I'm fine, but the evidence is clear that bottling up these feelings can make things worse.

In this episode, I discuss...

  • My feeling of being alone
  • How I am tackling the low points in my life
  • And what we can all do to reach out and find the light

Everybody's mental health has been challenged by the lockdowns and insecurities of the last year and it's not over. As we emerge from what we hope will be the worst of the pandemic, questions, concerns and anxieties remain. Men's Health Week 2021 (14-20 June) asks: how do we move forward?
